A Tribute

A tribute to Mark, written by Neil McLynn, has been posted on the Corpus Christi College website.

Mark Whittow (1957-2017)

Mark was University Lecturer and Fellow in Byzantine Studies, and a Fellow of Corpus Christi College since 2009. Prior to this appointment he had been Fellow and University Lecturer in History at St Peter’s College since 1998. In December 2017, Oriel – a college where he had been a research fellow and a lecturer – had announced his election as Provost from October 2018.

Mark was an enormous influence and presence in the life of the Faculty over recent decades. The energy he brought to the study of the Byzantine world in Oxford and beyond through his publications was matched by the decisive role that he played in recent years in the development of a global approach to the study and teaching of the medieval era, which linked Europe to wider networks of trade and knowledge. Oxford’s understanding of the Global Middle Ages was deeply marked by his enthusiasm and commitment.

Above all, generations of students, researchers and colleagues knew Mark as a warm and loyal friend who enriched all our lives. We will miss him enormously. To continue Mark’s work, we have set up a fund in his memory.  For details, and the opportunity to contribute, please follow the link below.
